When Self-Care Isn’t Enough

When exercising vigorously for one hour isn’t enough to offset eight hours of sitting at your desk.

When five minutes of meditation can’t keep your mind clear for more than five seconds.

When going outdoors to refresh your senses doesn’t make your eyes feel any less fatigued by screens.

When “going to bed early” is no longer early, it’s the new bedtime.

When journaling to help you process the day makes you feel overwhelmed by your own thoughts.

When reading or watching TV doesn’t provide distraction because real life is so much more complicated than fiction.

When there’s no one you can call and vent to because everyone you know is going through the same grief and challenges.

When you’re crying more during a normal work day than during a whole season of “This is Us.”

In 2020, self-care isn’t enough.

What we need is society care.

Here’s what would be enough:

Plentiful, safe, qualified, affordable daycares for working parents.

School districts that get the support they need to re-train teachers and make a real difference in rallying the community around our schools.

Technology and internet service that works consistently and is intuitive for children.

Health care that actually helps people get healthier instead of treating them when they’re already sick.

Governments, businesses, schools and organizations that actively seek to right inequities within their spheres of influence.

A living wage, a universal basic income, affordable higher education– anything that addresses income inequality and lets people sleep at night knowing their bills will be paid and homes won’t be lost.

World organizations that use the best science, technology and human brainpower to combat climate change.

Self-care is a band-aid. Society care is the cure.
