This month, I’m into…
I’ve dabbled in meditation before, but wasn’t able to stick to a routine until I tried Headspace. I started off with their free “Take 10” series, in which you participate in a guided meditation for 10 minutes a day over 10 days. I stopped in the middle, but decided to take it up again recently, and finished the series. I could feel a difference in just those few days. April and May tend to be stressful times of year for me, and in the past I’ve filled my journal pages with anxieties during these months. But this year? I feel calm, centered and in control. I have to assume Headspace is the cause of this effect. So I signed up for a full year of guided meditation (I got the first three months free with a special offer) and am now in the middle of a 15-minute series. It’s a little more challenging than the 10, but I’ve started to find the time passing more quickly with each day.
I’m also into…
After six years of living in our house, we finally got our backyard fenced in. It’s not a particularly fancy fence- just a black chain-link- so I didn’t expect to like it, just appreciate its utilitarian value. But surprisingly, I’m enjoying the new and spruced-up view from my kitchen window. The yard looks neater with a fence. And it has so much potential. A swing set, a comfortable chair, space for a future dog to run around… I can see the future in our new fence.
I love…
Hey, Tieks lovers? Move over. These are the most awesome flats, and they’re way cheaper than Tieks. I only have two pairs right now, these super-cute black/gold snakeskins and a blue that’s faded like denim. But I’m going to collect more. They go with everything and are so super comfortable. I’m a girl who loves quality footwear in small quantities, so I do a lot of research before buying shoes, and I’m telling you- these are the best.
And finally, I love…
I’m not much of a TV person, but I’m OBSESSED with this show. It amazes me how a house can be built with such economy of space, and I love the concept of living with only what one truly needs. I’m never going to live in one myself, because while I like to de-clutter, my husband likes to keep stuff. But at least I’m getting ideas for how to best use space in our normal-sized house, and doing possible future research on living in an RV (my summer vacation dream).
What are you into this month?
I’m not much of a TV person, either… but all of the shows (well, all two of them *lol*) that I sit down and watch come showtime are back on the air this month. Orphan Black just started on BBC America; it’s about a group of female clones (all played by the same actress) trying to learn more about their origins while fighting for their independence from the corporations who want to use them for research. And then there’s Game of Thrones, which starts on the 24th. So, the next couple months will be busy for me on the TV front.
Speaking of Tiny House Hunters and HGTV, have you watched Fixer Upper? That’s a really good show, too (and SO funny at times).
I haven’t watched Fixer Upper, though I’ve heard the same reviews! I kind of wish I liked Game of Thrones because it seems like all my writer friends are obsessed. But I can’t handle all the gore. I’m pretty squeamish when it comes to violence.
I’ve been obsessed with the tiny house shows myself–there’s something so freeing in the idea of discarding 99 percent of one’s belongings and living tiny. I don’t want to go as tiny as the people on these shows do, but I am inspired by the idea of downsizing and living with less stuff. I also had the chance to see a tiny house in person recently. Friends of mine helped their son and daughter-in-law build a tiny house that they will take on the road for their work. It was a simple, industrial-looking version, and it will be the son, daughter-in-law, their infant (!) and two cats going on the road. (Frankly, I don’t know how they’ll manage…their house is truly tiny. I would lose my mind.)
I’m also going to look into the Born flats–I’m getting pickier about the shoes I wear, and I’m willing to spend a little more money if I can find something cute and comfortable. Fewer things of better quality–that’s my motto!
Great motto, Kathy! I totally agree! Just a few minutes after I posted this, my friend (and blog follower) texted me to tell me she was wearing Born flats at that very moment.
