Happy Mothers Day! I have received some beautiful gifts from my family. But if I could wish for some less tangible, more personal gifts from my own mother figures, this is what I would ask for…
I’d pray to have my Grandma Evelyn’s beautiful hands. Her hands created works of art, wrote words of comfort and inspiration. Her hands healed the sick through the practice of Reiki. Her hands cupped my cheeks as she told me she loved me. Her love, her spirit, her creativity poured out of those beautiful hands.
I’d pray to have my Grandma Sophia’s beautiful laugh. Grandma Sophie’s laugh is infectious. She can use it to joke, to tease, to scoff, but always with kindness. Strangers love my grandmother; she turns them all into her friends. Her friendliness, her social strengths, burst out of her within that beautiful laugh.
I’d pray to have my mother-in-law Donna’s beautiful heart. Donna’s heart welcomed me into her family like her own daughter. You can see her heart practically beating outside her body when she looks at my son, her beloved grandson. Donna is the bedrock of our family; we all take our roots in her heart.
I’d pray to have my mother’s beautiful soul. When strangers talk to me about my mother, they tell me she’s one of the kindest, most giving people they’ve ever met. Her soul is full of faith, both in God and in people. She always believes the best of people; she’s always believed in me. What’s more, even though my mom is such a good person, she always strives to do better and be better every day. Through her musical gifts, her soul truly shines. My mother’s soul is beautiful in so many ways: kindness, devotion, faith and goodness.
Thank you to my mother figures for sharing your gifts with me; thank you to my son for allowing me to share my gifts with him.
If you were to inherit a personal or spiritual gift from your mother or mother-figure, what would you wish it to be?
